Introduction

Nutmeg tree is said to be originated from South East Asia and Indonesia but now it is also widely cultivated in Grenada, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It is an evergreen tree which attains a height of 15 to 20 meters and has dark green leaves and yellow flowers. Many commercial products like oleo resin, nutmeg butter and essential oil.

Nutmeg is the seed of the tree which weighs about 5 to 10 grams when dried. Nutmeg oil is made by the steam distillation process of the seeds. The oil is thin colorless liquid with a spicy smell. Nutmeg oil contains many chemical compounds like Limonene, Myristicin, monoterpene hydrocarbons, Pinene, Sabinene etc.  

Uses of Nutmeg oil

Aromatherapy uses: In aromatherapy nutmeg oil is widely used for the treatment of muscular and rheumatic pains. It helps in the treatment of diseases like arthritis, constipation, nausea, pain in the muscles, fatigue, poor blood circulation & indigestion.

Medicinal uses: Nutmeg oil is an analgesic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, laxative and tonic. It is therefore extensively used for the treatment of various diseases and for the purpose of energizing the body in many medicines.

Other uses: Nutmeg has a great taste. It is sweeter and has a very delicate flavor. Therefore it is used in cheese sauces as grated fresh. In India it is known as Jaiphal and is extensively used in sweets. It is also used as food additive and in many wines. In Europe it is used in many baked products, sauces and soups. This oil is also used in many men’s perfumes and has many other uses in industry.
