Introduction
The betel leaf oil is extracted from the heart shaped betel leaves of the Piper betel plant. This perennial creeper is a native of South and South East Asia i.e. Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and its leaves are widely used in these countries as a mild stimulant which becomes addictive over constant use. This creeper plant requires a support to grow. The plant is cultivated in especially fertile soil and high land. Alkaline, saline or waterlogged soils are unsuitable. The oil is extracted by steam distillation process of the betel leaf. The oil is a composition of phenols, tannic acid, sugar and amylum.
Uses of Betel Leaf oil
Aromatherapy: Although there are many uses of betel leaf oil, its use in aromatherapy messages is not well recognized. However, since the oil has no side effects, it can be assumed to be safely used for aromatherapy purposes. A professional aromatherapy expert is the best person to consult regarding its use.
Medical uses: The medical properties of the oil include antiseptic, astringent, anti bronchial, anti bacterial, anti fungal and coagulant properties. It is in fact an ancient Ayurvedic medicine. Betel leaf and areca nut together also cures bad breath. However, chewing of betel leaves is not advised during pregnancy.
In some places of India, especially in the states of Orissa and West Bengal, betel leaf is chewed after a meal. However, direct use of the betel leaf oil or the leaf in cooking is not reported.
Other uses: Betel leaf is also used in spiritual worship in India.
