Introduction
Bay leaf, or Laurus nobilis, is a native of the West Indies. Currently, it is cultivated across other countries of Mediterranean, India and Turkey. The bay leaf is an evergreen plant, and can reach up to 9 meters, with thick and glossy yellow coloured sprouting leaves.
The leaves eventually turn brown before they are used in cooking or for extraction of oil. The pale yellow bay leaf oil is extracted by the method of steam distillation of the leaves. The chemical constituents of the oil include eugenol, limonene, chavicol etc. Bay leaf oil has variety of uses.
Uses of Bay Leaf oil
Aromatherapy: With a strong pungent and spicy aroma bay leaf oil is used to stimulate the circulatory system. On contact with the skin, the oil produces a heating sensation that alleviates muscle tension. It also helps in improving memory and relieves headaches and sinus problems. It is used to treat sinus and lung congestion and is also useful for treating high blood sugar, fungal infections, bacterial and gastric ulcers and migraine headaches.
Medical uses: Bay leaf oil has anti rheumatic, analgesic, anti neuralgic, anticonvulsant, expectorant, antiseptic, astringent and stimulant properties. Bay leaf oil is used in the treatment of dandruff and promoting hair growth. It is also used in the treatment of muscular aches, neuralgia, poor circulation and rheumatism. It is useful in nervous, tension and stress, neuralgia, rheumatism and poor blood circulation.
Other uses: In India, bay leaves are widely used as a spice. It is used in the preparation of sauces, soups and stews.
