Introduction
This essential oil is derived from the seeds of the well-known carrot plant, scientifically known as Daucus carota. Carrot seed oil has an earthy and woody smell and the oil is pale orange to amber in appearance. The oil is extracted by cold pressing the seeds of the carrot plant.
The Dutch originally cultivated the plant, but nowadays the plant is cultivated in many parts of the world including India and the United States. The carrot plant is also called Queen Anne’s Lace by the western civilizations. Carrot seed oil is rich in vitamins just as the edible root. The flowers of the plant appear in a tiny cluster surrounding a central purple floret. The leaves are finely detailed.
Uses of Carrot Seed oil
Aromatherapy: This may be one of the most underrated essential oils in aromatherapy, but it has many uses and all of them are beneficial. It is good for the skin and prevents ageing. When taken as vapors, the oil strengthens the mucous membrane and treat symptoms for arthritis, gout and edema among others.
Medical uses: Therapeutically, both carrots and carrot seed oil are wonderful treatment for jaundice. Other therapeutic characters of the oil include diuretic, antiseptic, carminative, hepatic, stimulant and tonic. It also boosts the production of red blood cells. It also improves blood circulation. However, use of the oil is not recommended during pregnancy.
Culinary uses: Although not much prevalent, but the carrot seed oil can have culinary uses, as carrot itself is an edible root.
