Introduction

Marjoram oil is also an essential oil. It is extracted by the process of steam distillation through its dried and fresh leaves which is known as Knotted Marjoram. Its scientific name is Origanum Marjorana. The main constituents of this oil are Gamma Terpinene, Linalool, Sabinene Hydrate, Terpineo, Gamma Terpineo, Cymene, Linalyl Acetate and Alpha Terpinene. This plant of the Mediterranean region is used for various medicinal purposes.

It is a cold sensitive perennial herb under a shrub with sweet pine and citrus flavors. In Middle-East, Marjoram is also synonymous to Oregano. It is cultivated for its aromatic leaves which are either green or dry for its culinary purpose. The top is chopped when the flowers begin to dry slowly in the shade. It is often used in various herb combinations like za’atar and herbes de Provence. The flowering leaves and top portion of marjoram are steam-distilled to extract the essential oil which is yellowish in color. It is composed of a number of chemical compounds which are camphor, borneol and pinion.

Uses of Marjoram oil

Aromatherapy: Since it is analgesic in nature it reduces pain and is associated with fever, cold, inflammation, exertion of muscle, toothache, headache and other reasons. It is also helpful in treating all kinds of and problems related to it. It is used for numerous aromatherapy treatments.
